TVNZ U’s downtime, which is currently 12am to 12pm, is being replaced with Infomercials, as of midnight tonight. This downtime was previously filled with notification of the channel returning at midday.
From one viewpoint, it makes commercial sense to do something with the empty space, that could see some financial gain, however, from a viewer’s perspective, the question is begged as to why the channel isn’t playing meaningful content at this time instead? Infomercials do represent a solution that requires minimal financial input from the channel (in the form of not needing to purchase content), and brings some results from early morning watchers. Reminds me of an episode of the Gruen Transfer, where the effect of Informercials was discussed.

They should play music in the style of C4 between 12am and 4pm (to kill all those stupid repeats).
Definitely! Although I think that, sadly, infomercials bring in more revenue. :/
